Tesla has once again promised the launch of the new Roadster, originally unveiled in 2017, but which has yet to hit the streets.
According to the company’s vice president of engineering, Lars Moravy, the model is being developed as the “last and greatest car for drivers” before the definitive arrival of autonomous driving. A “surprising” demonstration is expected by the end of 2025, although details about the event and the car are still scarce.
The Roadster will have four seats, a removable glass roof, and all-wheel drive. Tesla claims the sports car will be able to travel up to 1,000 km on a single charge, exceed 400 km/h, and go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.9 seconds.
Despite these promises, there is skepticism about its realization. Elon Musk has even said that a version with SpaceX thrusters could accelerate to 100 km/h in less than a second, statements that contribute to the image of exaggeration surrounding the project.
Still, the model remains available for pre-order with an initial deposit of US$ 5,000, plus US$ 45,000 within 10 days to secure a production slot. The final price is expected to range between US$ 200,000 and US$ 250,000.
Even if the Roadster meets expectations, analysts point out that the supercar audience still prefers combustion engines, and that Tesla might be better off focusing on more affordable models, given the sales decline and the absence of a new entry-level car on the horizon.
